Highly collectable wooden figurine created during the 19th and 20th centuries.

These 'dolls' were carried by pregnant women of Asante, Ghana to ensure the births of beautiful and healthy babies. After pregnancy they became family fertility heirlooms, appreciated for their spiritual associations. This is a striking piece of art and unusual due to its large size and weight and colourful facial decoration.

The incised mark to the back of the head is believed to be the makers' signature. It is a meaningful representation of African beliefs and rituals, and a valuable addition to any collection of African or ethnographic memorabilia.

It is in amazing condition with minor wear.
